About Uvs Nuur Basin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Uvs Nuur Basin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve spans approximately 70,000 square kilometers across southwestern Mongolia and parts of the Russian Federation’s Tuva Republic. This expansive basin, centered around Uvs Nuur, Mongolia's largest lake and one of the few significant saline lakes in Central Asia, encompasses a complex mosaic of landscapes including mountain ranges, steppes, semi-deserts, wetlands, and alpine tundra. Designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1997, the area represents one of the most extensive intact temperate ecosystems on the planet, reflecting a unique confluence of Central Asian flora and fauna. The basin is critical habitat for endangered species such as the snow leopard, argali sheep, Asiatic wild ass (khulan), and various migratory birds including flamingos and Dalmatian pelicans. Culturally, the area is home to historic nomadic communities who maintain traditional herding lifestyles that are closely intertwined with the environment.

Outdoor enthusiasts visiting Uvs Nuur Basin can explore its rugged mountains through trekking and horseback riding, birdwatch the rich migratory bird populations in the protected wetlands, and camp under vast star-filled skies in a remote wilderness setting. Key landmarks include the Great Lakes depression, the Tsagaan Shuvuut Valley, and the saline Uvs Lake itself. The reserve’s remoteness and limited infrastructure give it a true wilderness appeal but require careful planning and local guidance. Its combination of dynamic landscapes and traditional nomadic culture provides a rare ecological and cultural journey in Central Asia, attracting nature lovers, scholars, and adventure travelers worldwide.
